The objective of Internet online marketing is to show visitors ads based on knowledge of the known visitor profile and the content of the ad’s destination website.  Travel websites were the first to use this approach by featuring ads for hotels at JFK Airport to visitors searching for flights to New York.  Internet online marketing has come a long way since then and is now highly sophisticated.  Search engines harness knowledge about Internet users to sell more products and services.  They are good and getting better at it.

Ad Networks:

1) Representative; advertisers select placements. Have to know all possibilities.

2) Blind; networks select ad placement. Cheap—and you get what you pay for.

3) Targeted; use of contextual data to determine optimal ad placement. The targeting will continue to improve. Privacy considerations await resolution.

Email Marketing:

1) Personal emails; Advertising in personal email
looks tacky and has npt proven successful.

2) Promotional blasts; excellent method for getting new information to permission- based recipients (customer retention);poor method for “prospecting” to others. Caution: Downside of being considered a spammer outweighs benefits to legitimate businesses.

Banner Advertising:

  • Typically overpriced while market determines value
